Thought Map: Physical Education Pedagogy

Artist statement

This a representation of my Physical Education pedagogy that I have developed throughout my time in the B.Ed program at St.FX. This connects to the theme of the anthology because over my time in high school, I loved Physical Education, and I never quite understood why people never enjoyed it besides feeling they were not "sporty" enough. However, throughout my time in the program, I my eyes have been opened as to why it might not have been as enjoyable for others. Physical Education can be a class that is not very inclusive for many reasons. Whether it is not a safe space for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to change in locker rooms, or even females not feeling comfortable in a class that is stereotypically seen as male-dominant. There are so many aspects of Physical Education that must be changed to make it a more inclusive class for everyone. I want to give my students the experience that I had in Physical Education. It is so important to have students feel comfortable as Physical Education is not just about kids playing sports. It is about helping them learn a healthy lifestyle and being shown that being physically active does not just have to be about learning a new sport or going for a run. If the class is not a safe and inclusive space, then there are going to be a lot of students missing out on a fun experience that will be helpful for the rest of their lives. I hope to continue to build upon my pedagogy and be able to make a difference in the lives of my future students and the greater world of Physical Education
